Pool Fencing Safety Requirements
Nothing is more important than security and safety when it comes to pool fence. In this situation many communities have standard requirements that keep small children from unintended harm. Some rural areas don't require pool fencing but most residential communities do for good reason. Also, many home owner insurance companies require pool fencing due to liability issues. Generally speaking though, if you have a pool then you should have a fence.

Pool fencing comes in many shapes and sizes but is generally considered "pool fence" if it meets certain standards. Those national standards are set by BOCA. Local communities and building departments also set the codes and they can exceed the national requirements. Local codes trump national codes when the local codes are more stringent. Generally speaking, BOCA standards require pool fence to be a minimum of four feet high, not climbable by a youngster, and have no openings greater than 4 inches for them to squeeze through. The gates may require special openers so that a child is not able gain access without adult supervision.

While privacy fencing for pools is a good way to to keep one's privacy from the neighbors, it is usually not a good idea block the line of sight from your house to the pool for matters of safety. If someone needs help in a pool or a spa it's best that you can see and hear them. So be sure you know what your local pool code requirements are before going ahead with a purchase.
